The Governor George Fergusson delivered the annual Throne Speech on November 7, laying out the Bermuda Government's plans for the upcoming year. Economic recovery will continue to be the national priority, the Government announced. This speech marked the opening of a new parliamentary year, the third under the new One Bermuda Alliance Government and the first under their new party leader and Premier Michael Dunkley.

On July 10, 2014, the Centre for Justice presented a conference entitled “Justice Today: Human Rights Since Emancipation” which commemorated the 180 years that have passed since Emancipation in Bermuda. The conference was organized as part of the Centre’s mandate to promote education in the areas of human rights, civil liberties and administration of justice and to foster civic engagement.

Bermuda Supreme CourtOn June 10 2014, MJM Limited presented to the Hamilton Rotary Club Members on debt collection, recovery and the enforcement of judgment process in Bermuda. Presenting to approximately 25 members, Litigation Associate Kimberley D. Caines explained the process of debt recovery in the Magistrate’s Court and the Supreme Court of Bermuda. Guiding the attendees through the debt collection process, Kimberley displaced common misconceptions and shared some observations from her practice on the court’s approach to debt recovery in the current market. Kimberley also shared with members the various mechanisms available to enforce local judgments.

The first Mid-Year Meeting to be held in Bermuda of Insuralex, a worldwide network of independent insurance and reinsurance lawyers, drew a large crowd of over 120 attendees to its recent seminar, of which 37 people were from overseas (representing over 12 countries!). MJM Limited is the Bermuda member of Insuralex and hosted the group this month. The guest speakers at the seminar at XL conference centre, addressing the audience on Aggregation in the Reinsurance Context and the Insurability of Fines and Penalties, were from London’s Devereux Chambers, with whom MJM Limited has strong links. Speakers included: Colin Wynter, QC, Chambers & Partners Insurance Silk of the year 2012; Richard Harrison, Leading Insurance Junior; and Andrew Burns, Leading Insurance Junior and co-author of the Law of Reinsurance with Colin Edelman QC, published by Oxford Press. The One Bermuda Alliance Government has promised to continue to make revitalisation of the Bermuda economy its primary focus as it enters its second year in power. The promise featured prominently in Government’s Throne Speech (777 KB PDF) which marked the beginning of a new session of the Bermuda Legislature, and in which the one year old Government set out its plans for the forthcoming parliamentary year that began in early November.
